Mike Thompson - Blood Lamp, 2009
“The average American consumes 3,383kwh of energy per year. That’s equivalent to leaving the light on in 4 rooms for a whole year. The simple flick of a switch allows us to power appliances and gadgets 24/7 without a thought to where it comes from and the cost to the environment.
For Blood Lamp to work one breaks the top off, dissolves the powder, and uses his or her own blood to power a simple light.
By creating a lamp that can only be used once, the user must consider when light is needed most, forcing him or her to rethink how wasteful he or she is with energy, and how precious it is.”

But there are people who’ll try to hurt you through the good they see in you—knowing that it’s the good, needing it and punishing you for it. Don’t let it break you when you discover that.
Ayn Rand
People create their own questions because they are afraid to look straight. All you have to do is look straight and see the road, and when you see it, don’t sit looking at it - walk.
Ayn Rand
Learn to value yourself, which means: fight for your happiness.

I am the most tired woman in the world. I am tired when I get up. Life requires an effort I cannot make. Please give me that heavy book. I need to put something heavy like that on top of my head. I have to place my feet under the pillows always, so as to be able to stay on earth. Otherwise I feel myself going away, going away at a tremendous speed, on account of my lightness. I know that I am dead. As soon as I utter a phrase my sincerity dies, becomes a lie whose coldness chills me. Don’t say anything, because I see that you understand me, and I am afraid of your understanding. I have such a fear of finding another like myself, and such a desire to find one! I am so utterly lonely, but I also have such a fear that my isolation be broken through, and I no longer be the head and ruler of my universe. I am in great terror of your understanding by which you penetrate into my world; and then I stand revealed and I have to share my kingdom with you.”
- Anais Nin

And in that instant comes
the low echo
of a beyond beyond,
a language archaic and soaked
in syllables and accents suited
for re-de-trans-forming,
bringing light
which brings out
melanin
from beneath another skin:
the hollow of a voice
which speaks alone.

Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaccable spark, in the hopeless swamps of the approximate, the not quite, the not at all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish in lonely frustration for the life you deserved, but have never been able to reach. Check your road and the nature of your battle. The world you desired can be won. It exists, it is real, it is possible, it is yours.

Then for an instant, feeling stripped and bare, I teeter on an invisible line suspended between something terrible and something terribly sad.

I discovered that my obsession for having each thing in the right place, each subject at the right time, each word in the right style, was not the well-deserved reward of an ordered mind but just the opposite: a complete system of pretense invented by me to hide the disorder of my nature. I discovered that I am not disciplined out of virtue but as a reaction to my negligence, that I appear generous in order to conceal my meanness, that I pass myself off as prudent because I am evil-minded, that I am conciliatory in order not to succumb to my repressed rage, that I am punctual only to hide how little I care about other people’s time. I learned, in short, that love is not a condition of the spirit but a sign of the zodiac.

the-petty-bourgeoisie:
A video comprised entirely of an animated sequence of 300 morphed photographs. What you see is a completely surreal and oniric scene.
Nestled in an elegant setting of cuckoo clocks, wolfs and deer heads, the story of two beautiful sisters and the ratio between their love and hate relationship is told. The story is told through the use of both soft and mechanical loop movements of their kisses, hair pulling and whispers. The video catches a memory and suspends it in time.
